Cristina Mittermeier trained as a marine biologist and left the field because she concluded the data was not the problem: the science on ocean decline was already sound, and it was not changing what anyone did.
What she did instead was coin the term conservation photography and build a career proving the premise, that an image moves a policy or a budget in a way a dataset does not. She is a National Geographic photographer and in 2014 cofounded SeaLegacy with Paul Nicklen, an organization built specifically to use visual media as a conservation instrument rather than as documentation of things already lost.
The credentials are the kind that come from doing the work rather than presenting it: a National News and Documentary Emmy in 2024 as part of the National Geographic team behind The Last Ice, the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year award, the Sylvia Earle Medal, and Travel and Leisure's Global Vision Award. Real Leaders has named her among the world's best keynote speakers.
For a corporate audience the session is not a slideshow of beautiful animals, though the images are extraordinary and do most of the work. The argument underneath is about communication: that an organization which cannot make people feel the thing it has measured will not get the thing it has measured acted on. That transfers directly to any leadership team struggling to move an audience with a deck full of correct numbers.
She is based in Canada and speaks internationally. The sessions suit sustainability and ESG programs, annual meetings wanting a closing keynote with real weight, and marketing, brand and communications audiences, where the storytelling argument is the point rather than the ocean.

No, and the wider argument is why marketing and communications audiences book it. The premise is that an organization which cannot make people feel what it has measured will not get it acted on, which is the reason she left marine biology for photography. That transfers to any leadership team trying to move a room with a deck of correct numbers.
A term she coined for using images as an instrument of conservation rather than as documentation of things already lost. SeaLegacy, which she cofounded with Paul Nicklen in 2014, was built around that premise, and her work carries a 2024 Emmy, the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year award and the Sylvia Earle Medal.
Yes, she speaks internationally and also delivers virtually. Travel is a factor in the quote and in availability, so include the location, date and format in the inquiry.
