Does your speaker need to be local?
Searching by city is a reasonable instinct and a slightly misleading one. Keynote speaking is a national business: the great majority of professional speakers travel to wherever the event is, and price the travel into the engagement. Filtering by location first can rule out the right speaker over a line item that turns out to be small.
That does not make geography irrelevant. It changes what it is relevant to, which is cost, schedule risk, and in some cases genuine standing in a regional market.
When booking local genuinely helps
Two situations make it worth prioritizing. The first is budget: if flights and a hotel night would push the engagement past what you can approve, a nearby speaker removes that entirely. The second is credibility in a specific market. A speaker who is actually known and respected in your city can reference the local business community with a specificity a visitor would have to research. Proximity on its own, without that standing, buys you nothing an audience will notice.

The underrated factor is schedule risk rather than money. A speaker flying in the morning of your event is one delayed connection away from an empty stage. Where the date matters, ask for arrival the evening before and treat that hotel night as insurance rather than an expense. How much does speaker travel add to the cost?
For a domestic booking it is typically flights, one or two hotel nights, and ground transport, which is a modest line item next to the fee itself at most budget levels. Some speakers quote an all-in rate that already covers it. Ask for the number as part of the shortlist rather than discovering it at contract stage.
Can a speaker present virtually instead of traveling?
Most can, and it is worth asking about even for an in-person event. A virtual keynote removes travel cost and the risk of a delayed flight, and it is also the natural fallback if weather or disruption threatens the date. Research-led topics tend to translate to remote delivery better than highly interactive formats do.
