About Whitney

Whitney Johnson works on the half of organizational change that an org chart does not describe: what happens to an individual when the work they had mastered is taken away and replaced with work they have not learned yet.

Her framework is the S Curve of Learning, a model of how a person moves through any new role. Progress is slow at the base while the fundamentals are being acquired, steep through the middle as competence compounds, and flat at the top once the work has become routine. Its value is diagnostic: someone stalling at the top of a curve and someone struggling at the bottom look similar from a distance and need opposite responses from a manager. It is also the clearest available account of why capable people resign shortly after a change program is declared a success.

She codified the approach in Disrupt Yourself in 2015, extended it to teams in Build an A-Team in 2018, and to organizations in Smart Growth, published by Harvard Business Review Press in 2022 and a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestseller. Thinkers50 named her a top ten business thinker in 2021.

The credentials behind the framework are not the usual ones. She was an Institutional Investor-ranked equity research analyst at Merrill Lynch, then cofounded the Disruptive Innovation Fund with Clayton Christensen, the Harvard Business School professor whose theory of disruption she applied to investing before she applied it to careers. She is chief executive of Disruption Advisors, hosts the Disrupt Yourself podcast, lectures for Harvard Business School Corporate Learning, and was selected as a Marshall Goldsmith 100 Coach.

Her sessions suit an organization that has already settled on the change and now has to move people through it. Audiences leave able to locate themselves and their reports on the curve, which is a more useful thing for a manager to hold the week after a restructure than a general argument for adaptability.

Whitney Johnson's fee is not published here and is quoted per event. What is the S Curve of Learning?

A model of how a person moves through any new role: slow at the base while the fundamentals are acquired, steep in the middle as competence compounds, and flat at the top once the work is routine. Its practical use is diagnostic, because someone stalled at the top and someone struggling at the bottom look alike from a distance and need opposite responses from a manager.

Is the material for individuals or for leaders?

Both, and the framework is the same either way. An individual uses the curve to decide when to take on work they have not yet mastered; a manager uses it to see where each person on a team sits and why engagement is falling. Organizations most often book it for managers during a period of role change.

Does Whitney Johnson run workshops as well as keynotes?

Yes. The keynote establishes the curve and a workshop applies it to the actual team, which is the format organizations choose when the goal is a plan for specific people rather than a shared vocabulary for the day.
