Mike Horn

Mike Horn is the resilience speaker whose adversity was chosen, which makes him a different proposition from the rest of this category and a more useful one for certain rooms.

South African by birth and Swiss by residence, he completed Latitude Zero between 1999 and 2001, a solo circumnavigation of the globe along the equator without motorized transport, traveling on foot, by bike, by boat and by kayak across the Amazon, the oceans and the deserts. It took a year and a half and won him the Laureus World Sports Award for Alternative Sportsperson of the Year.

He followed it with Arktos, between 2002 and 2004, becoming the first person to circle the Arctic Circle solo and without motorized transport: some twenty thousand kilometers through two Arctic winters at temperatures reaching minus sixty degrees Celsius. Between 2016 and 2019 he ran Pole2Pole, a circumnavigation of the world by way of both poles, which included crossing Antarctica alone in fifty-seven days.

The involuntary part of his story is what makes the keynote more than an adventure reel. His wife Cathy, a trained nurse who managed the logistics of his expeditions and was his closest partner in the work, died of breast cancer in February 2015 after seven years of illness. The Antarctic crossing that followed was a childhood ambition he had deferred for decades, and he has been open that he went after it because of her death rather than in spite of it.
